Review:  WINDANSEA - Frederick Regenold

This book was not a typical read for me. Normally I read novels that predominantly feature an interracial relationship between a BW/WM. This novel was just too good to pass up. The author's talent and descriptiveness make this book enjoyable and extremely realistic. Each scene was described so well that as I read the entire book it felt as if I was there with the characters. I have never been to La Jolla, California but Mr. Regenold's descriptions made it seem that I was there in La Jolla enjoying its beauty and the people who live there.

An interracial relationship between a BW/WM is featured in this book, but there are many important relationships in the novel. Each relationship is special in its own sense, and each relationship helps to make this novel the great read that it is. It is true that the book contains a lot of sex, but the sex is important in understanding the characters and the relationships they have formed. The characters are so different, and this diversity keeps the book interesting. It is very easy to connect with all of the major characters because the reader is given important information about each character that makes it so easy to like every single one. I have never been so pleased with such an array of characters. My favorite character was Nat, and it was just natural for me to like him. He came across as such a real character, and the problems he faced are problems that any normal person might face. Nat is just one of the many excellent characters who will touch your heart in some way.

The reader never loses interest in this novel. The first chapter is so intriguing, powerful, and a bit shocking that it draws you into the story right away. Romance, murder, mystery, and religion are a few of the themes that help to keep the plot entertaining. I found it hard to stop reading and put the book down. This novel made me laugh at times, but it also made me cry. There were scenes so emotionally powerful that I couldn't help but cry. Each tear was well shed. The most powerful aspect of this book is its wonderful message that becomes clear at the end. I don't want to give it away, but for me it made a difference in my life. No book has ever affected me this deeply.

This is my first book by Mr. Regenold, and I have developed a profound respect for him and his wonderful writing. I can't praise him enough for this outstanding book. I enjoyed this book so much that I am going to read Coast Walk, the first book he published. If his first book is in any way as good as this one then I am in for a real treat. This book comes highly recommended by me, and I implore everyone to look beyond the sex to find the heart of this excellent book. If you do, you will not be disappointed.
